Time to dream.
In case you missed it, the government agency DARPA launched a test of the HTV-2 hypersonic plane yesterday. The test failed ultimately, but what a concept. Some day, if the hypersonic approach woks, it would allow a flight from NY to LA in 12 minutes.
Holy shit.
The sad thing is, the majority of the population is inward facing. The economy, their relationships, work. Many cried "this is a waste money, stupid - who needs this - we need jobs!" They are not wrong, but this point of view is so short-sighted it is sickening.
We need something to dream about.
The generations past had the first flight by the Wright Brothers (and the French guy who did it before them). They had Charles Lindbergh. I remember as a very small child seeing the first man walk on the moon. It is just a blurry memory but one of the few things I actually remember. All eyes were to the sky, dreaming about the possibilities. All people have to dream about now is a new fucking iPhone with 4G.
What does this have to do with design and creative? Everything. Just think how the space age influenced all design - industrial, architecture - print. Imagine how design would be different if American kids here in NY - slaving away on the newest website craze - were able to see what is going on in Spain, Argentina or Paris first hand? The creativity in these countries is beyond belief, and would dramatically change our very pragmatic approach to things like web design. To wit - in Europe - people still want to create "experiential" websites.
Anyway, all I ask is that our government, all governments - is to not be afraid of spending on innovation. The money spent is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of a static, device-worshiping world. Also, the money spent on these initiatives will help people and global economies one-billion fold if it actually works. It will change the world for the better.
