Blue redux: blue in restaurants?
I recently heard that Burger King sales are sliding.
Their agency won a bunch of awards for the work that they are doing for them. Truth be told, some of the work is pretty smart - much of it is pointless. Who really cares about a facebook application for a hamburger place - I mean - but that's another post (will be titled something like "viral video, myspace, youtube, facebook, twitter, etc. ...you may or may not belong here - think before you act (or follow the herd)...)
In my opinion, it is the duty of an agency to not only produce clever work - it is the duty to help increase sales. Remember? That's why we produce "creative."
My point here is that someone who has basic understanding of how color works - needs to tell Burger King to change the fucking color on their buildings. I posted this blog below last July - and the Burger King near my house is still blue. Their sales are still tanking. I mean, their food is good is on par with McDonald's - which is kicking their ass.

FROM JOHN MAMUS: DESIGN EVERYTHING, JULY 2008
Here in the US there is a fast-food chain called "Burger King." It is a very good, very French name.
In any case, the predominant color of the exterior of the restaurant is blue.
Do you know why this is a very, very bad idea?
Strategic platforms in agencies generally do not cover things such as color palettes, visual style or typography. At MAMUS we feel very strongly about strategically informed design. It is critical that palette, design, etc be investigated and interrogated beyond "it looks nice and the client likes it."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Q: If you were to rebrand and redesign the "Burger King" you would start by changing the exterior of the building. Why?
A: Blue is an appetite suppressant.

If I were King I would say "off with his head!"
